BioAncaster Trustee, Alex Johnstone is looking to bring her passion for education reform from the school board to provincial politics. Johnstone, who has served on the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board for the past four years, is vying for the NDP nomination in Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale on May 14th.

Johnstone, 31 was first elected HWDSB Trustee in 2010 for Wards 11 and 12 and as a first-time candidate, garnered the highest vote totals of any trustee in the City. Encouraged to seek the nomination by provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath, Johnstone says she believes the issues in this election are too important to stay on the sidelines. "Families in Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough and Westdale have seen billions wasted that could have been spent on our hospitals and schools; We need the positive change that Andrea Horwath offers that will produce real results for everyday people," she said.

If successful in the contested nomination, she would go up against 13 year Liberal incumbent Ted McMeekin who currently sits as Minister of Community Services in the provincial cabinet and second-time PC candidate Donna Skelly - a former CHCH-TV host.

It's no small feat to take down a sitting cabinet minister, but Johnstone believes she has the energy and work ethic to take the riding for NDP.

Others agree: "Alex has a strong record of standing up for special education, introduced changes to ensure Board construction projects produce higher quality results and are safer; she was also instrumental in bringing a new elementary school to Ancaster-Meadowlands. She works hard and she makes a difference." said Tim Simmons, past HWDSB Chair.

Johnstone has been a regular NDP commentator on TV Hamilton Cable 14's public affairs show 'The Opinionators'. She also works as Community Development Coordinator at YWCA Hamilton where she has helped lead efforts to involve more women in local politics, fought for affordable housing and safer communities.

She's been on the forefront of addressing income inequality in Hamilton as well. As Trustee, Johnstone helped lead the HWDSB to become Ontario's first public sector employer to adopt a 'Living Wage' - an initiative led locally by the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction. Johnstone was recently profiled on a new Living Wage website launched by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives speaking about the Hamilton board's national leadership as a living wage employer:

Johnstone and her partner Dave reside in Ancaster.
